One Year On

How time flies, one year ago three men made a decision that affected our life's forever, but in life with every evil thing comes a good thing and in two day's time we will be celebrating the birth of AFC Wimbledon.

From the long walk to Ganders Green Lane, to AFCW 1st goal by Trigger at Bromley, to the 1st win away to Enfield & all the other pre-season game.

Then there was the opening days fixture away to Sandhurst Town who could forget that I think even if we had lost it wouldn't have mattered that much and all the away matches had their own little eccentricities from mega stands to no roof's stands, from old train trips to boat trip, from cheese rolls to curry queues.

The goals have been special also from Sim Johnston & Danny Oakins long range goals to Ali Russell's hat-trick & Andrew Pettys four, Neil Robson free kick where also a major treat to watch, and then there was Kevin Coopers forty goal's and none with his head.

This Club and the Fans has given me personally one the best seasons for a long time and for that I would like to say a big thank you.

I would also like to here your best and worst moments of the season so to record them in the archives email me here email.

Fifteen years ago and it still brings a tear to my eye.

Farleigh lost the plot, Netherne lost the Cup.

How do you combine a football match with a boxing match, well usual you have a bad tackle and all players involved in handbags at dawn, tonight was different tonight you start the match stick a manager in his technical area and a player in the dressing room, then five minutes after the game starts the latter then comes out of the tunnel and floors the manager with one punch, he then gets surrounded by his team mates including the keeper who also starts throwing punches, the ref then stops the match.

Five minutes later the football match restarted with a throw in and the keeper still on the pitch, this little incident seem to affect the NV team more than FR, and with 20 minutes or so gone FR had a chance to score, but put the ball into the side netting the ball them rebounded back on to the pitch and was kick off for a corner, yes a corner, from the Corner NV cleared their lines only for the ball to drove home from the edge of the box 1-0.

The 2nd goal was just a controversial after a couple of pinball shots in the box, Danny Roberts cleared head the ball off the line only for the linesman to give a goal.

NV then showed some fighting spirit themselves, but theirs was on the pitch and just before half time Dave Fry ran through the he FR defence and curled the ball pass the keeper goal or was it the lineman had his flag up the ref went over and had a word with and after a short chat the ref awarded the goal, 2-1 half time.

The 2nd half started and within six minutes FR had extended the lead, when a long ball went straight between the NV central defenders, Mark Nicholas and Sim Johnstone who both seem to think the other was going to clear it only for the FR forward to run pass them both and have a one on one with Ray Merry, who did well to make him go wide and have to cross the ball into the box for a simple tap in 3-1.

With about 10 minutes left Chris Theodore went to brake up a small tussle on the ground only to slip and in doing so, it looked like his foot made contact with the FR player on the ground and the ref sent him off.

Down to ten men NV had a lot more of the attacking play and pulled the score back to 3-2, but none of their other chance would going in and where summed up best when the FR Keeper came well out of his box to slide the ball for a throw in and while he was struggling to clear a NV player off him, NV took it quickly the NV no.16 turned and hit a looping ball from 10 yards outside the box at an open goal only for it to hit the top of the crossbar and get cleared for a corner.

Final result 3-2 Farleigh Rovers, well done to Trigger and the lads for getting to the final and great to see you shaking hands with the crowd after the game.

Luton coming to Town

Luton Towns website has posted news of a pre-season against us on Tuesday the 5th of August at Kingsmeadow KO 7.45pm

Sunday 11th May 2003
Netherne Village 4-3 AFC Wimbledon

On a wet and windy Sunday afternoon the Dons paid a visit to Netherne to thank them for their support with players etc this season, with Netherne also getting some good preparation against a nearly all 1st team AFCW team, NV had Trigger starting in midfield and took the lead, when the ref awarded a penalty for handball, then NV went 2-0 up with a fine strike from the right of the box past Ray Merry.

The Dons pulled one back before half time when Gareth Graham & Andy Sullivan took a short free kick and centred the ball in for Danny Oakins to side foot the ball home half time 2-1.

On exiting the club house just after half the rain was coming down harder and the Dons had pulled a goal back 2-2, and then went 2-3 up, but NV did not give up and pulled back to 3-3.

Then Gareth went off with about 15 minutes left and 2 minutes later came back out of the changing rooms modelling a no. 13 green top and replaced Ray Merry in goal, Ray then came on and went up front and only just missed the chance to put the Dons in the lead, when he put the ball clear into the next field, then with five minutes left NV work their way down the line and swung in a low cross, which 3 Dons had covered, until a NV player slipped in between them and drove the ball pass a diving Gareth Graham 4-3.

Matt Everard gave GG stick for letting the goal, then giving him a crafty smile to show he was only joking, before stripping his top of and saying to Gareth you go centre back and finished the game in goal.

Final result 4-3 Netherne and good but wet day had by all, and the NV performance was much better than the 0-0 draw the day before against Bookham, next up for Netherne V is a Cup Final on Tuesday against Farleigh Rovers at Tooting & Mitchams ground.

Don't forget players like Sim Johnstone, Danny Roberts, Dave Fry, Dave Towse, Akim Gallimore, Daniel Couch, Chris Theodore and of course Trigger have been a part of this club from the begining so let's get as many Dons down there to support them as possible. Directions

How great was today.

AFC Wimbledon 5 - Raynes Park Vale 1

Well done to Raynes Park Vale for making this a great game to watch and top goal, but two goals from Kevin Cooper one a penalty, plus two well headed goals from Danny Oakins and another Beckhamess free kick from Neil Robsons gave the Dons a 5-1victory over local rivals.

Dave Beasent, Lawrie Sanchez, Robbie Earle, Roger Joseph, Dickie Guy plus some of the 63 Amateur Cup winning team all turned up and came on the pitch at half time.

After the match Coops final scored with his head on the 5th or 6th cross from Andy Sullivan he planted the ball and Ivor it to the back of the net and raised over £1000 for the Stadium Fund.

Coops runner up to Zola in BBC Londons award

Kevin Cooper polled 35% of the vote to finish 2nd behind Zola who polled 38% in the BBC London's player of the season, but he's still the best in our eye's well done Coops.

Saturday 3 May 2003
Reading Town 0 - AFC Wimbledon 2

A goal in each half sealed the win for the Dons, in a not to convincing win where Reading T only had one shot on goal and Coops missed a 2nd half penalty and could have had at least the or four more goals as well.

Matt's goal came in the usual way after Sully was brought down on the edge of the box, Neil Robson popped in the freekick and there was Matt Everard to head home his tenth goal since joining us.

Coops goal came 14 minutes into the 2nd half when Keith Ward got hold of the ball on the halfway line and lofted the ball into the box where Coops yes Coops got his head to the ball and put it over the keepers head, but not in the direction of the goal he then rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home.

The penalty came from a corner where 3 or 4 player tussled for the ball on the line and Reading T's No. 4 scooped the ball away with his hand, Kevin placed the ball down and hit it low to his right the keeper guessed right and parried it away into the path of Matt Everard who then hit the ball out the ground.

Three more points and another clean sheet, next away match is in Wales against Newport County on the 2nd August.

On the Head Coops

Kevin Cooper has scored 38 Goals this season, but as yet none with his head some people will say it doesn't matter how you score them as long as they go in, which is true and of course and every goal he's score for us this season has brought a smile to all our faces.

But if Coops can score just the once with his head in the remaining fixtures he would have help to raise more than £500 towards the Stadium Fund thanks to Niall Couper who has issued that challenge to him, but it would be nice if some more pledges could be made before the weekends games.

If you want to make a pledge click the following link Sponsor Coops and Niall will add your name to the list for sponsors.

Good Luck Coops We Know You Can Do It, also don't forget to vote for Coops in the BBC London award see below to vote.
