A single trademark Matt Everard headed goal on fifty four minutes from a corner gave the dons the three points in a tight and physical match, Whyteleafe had their best chance in the 1st half when a shot from distance flew past the diving Danny Naisbitt and hit the post and out.

Martin Randall was replaced on the half an hour mark after a crunching tackle left him limping, he was not the only dons player to go off injury as all three subs came on for injured players, Robert Ursell received a knock late on in the game and Michael Woolner was on the end of a Catona style chop by ex Don Andrew Petty who received a yellow card.

No much else happened in the match apart from another tackle, when Richard Butler was clear through on goal and was clipped from behind again only a yellow card was given, but the dons did get a free kick that ended with the corner that produced the goal, so some justice there then.

AFC Wimbledon 3
Walton & Hersham 1

Walton & H made the better start and for the first twenty five minutes they put the dons under pressure at the back and on twenty four minutes they took the lead after the linesman waved for a handball in the box and the referee Alison Chapman awarded a penalty, which was put away by W&H Neil Lampton.

Within minutes W&H nearly double the lead when they broke down the left and crossed the ball and found Mark Nwokeji unmarked in the six yard box blasted the ball over the bar.

This seemed to wake the dons up and after a couple of close chances to level the match Richard Butler ran onto a through ball and rounded the keeper on the edge of the box and rammed the ball in to the back of the net one all.

The dons attack the Westbank in the 2nd half and from the start where testing the W&H keeper, the Wizard Ursell near gave the dons the lead when he caught the keeper of guard and just curled the ball from outside the box,but the keeper just tipped it over the bar for a corner from which Matt Everard also nearly scored with his head.

Joe Sheerin replaced Martin Randell up front and on seventy three minutes he broke free on the right wing and headed towards goal only to find the keeper rushing out to meet him, Joe chipped the ball pass him, Richard Butler chased after the ball that was going wide of goal with a defender in toe and just as Richard was about to reach the ball the W&H defender shoved him in the back sending flying into the hoarding and the ref awarded her second penalty of the match, the Wizard stepped up and placed the ball on the spot the keeper saved the penalty but the ball came back to the Wizard who just dinked the ball back over the keeper two one.

With ninety minutes on the clock Joe Sheerin once again went clear on the right wing and headed for goal and for reason known only to him the keeper again rushed out to meet him, having already had a practice shot earlier Joe made no mistake this time and lobbed the keeper into the back of the net.

Full time 3-1 and five out of five so far and with the Old William not able to conquer in Hastings the dons have opened up a three point gap at the top of the table.

AFC Wimbledon 2 Banstead Athletic 0

The Dons came through a hard fought battle Banstead didn't offer to much of a threat up front, but their midfield and defence where solid and held out against the dons for the 1st forty five minutes and it wasn't until just before the end of the 1st half that the dons created any real chances, Richard Butler came close after lobbing the out running keeper but the ball just went over, then the Wizard Ursell went on a run at the Banstead defence but was unable to make the final ball count.

The opening goal came ten minutes into the second half the dons received a freekick in the center of the pitch about ten yards outside the box the Wizard lined the ball up and curled the ball round the wall out of the reach of the diving keeper.

Martin Randall replaced Jamie Taylor upfront on sixty one minutes and just four minutes after that Richard Butler laid the ball into his path inside the box and Martin drilled the ball into the top of the net.

Banstead had a couple of chances late on, the dons and Banstead had a game of head tennis in the box late on, but Danny Naisbett was never really troubled and kept a clean sheet the 1st of the season and dons ended the night with three more points and top of the table on goal difference with the Met Police hot on our tails also with twelve out of twelve points.

Saturday 21st August 2004
Horsham 2 AFC Wimbledon 3

The dons started the game playing down hill, but it was Horsham who had the better start and after ten minutes of defending the dons took the lead against the run of play, a one two between Richard Butler and Robert Ursell left Butler with only the keeper to beat and he slide the ball under him.

The lead didn't last long, only four minutes had gone before Horsham had pulled the game level, a cross to the back post looked like it was going out, but Horsham player some how managed to get the ball back and hit the ball low into the six yard box where Gary Charman had run it to space to knock the ball pass Danny Naisbett.

With the front two of Horsham causing the back three all sort of trouble, its wasn't looking to good for the dons and it was about to get worse, when Gavin Bolger was adjudged to have fouled one of the Horsham players right on the edge of the box and from the resulting freekick Luke Gelding curled the ball just out of Danny's reach into the corner of the net and the dons looked rattled.

Just after the goal Mr.Anderson was forced to make a change as Ginge limped off and was replaced with Steve Gibson who went to left wing back and Michael Woolner moved into the space left by Ginge, the dons down settle and kept the score at two one at half time.

The 2nd half saw the dons we have got used too and from the kick off wave upon wave of attacks on the Horsham defence and with each attack either being just cleared away, saved or knocked with it was looked like one of those days when nothing would go in, the dons also had a clear penalty waved away the 2nd of the day when the Horsham defender ran straight into Richard Butler sending him flying.

Joe Sheerin came on to add to Horshams worries, the Horsham players also started to go down at any slight knock trying to waste time, which came back to haunt them later, with two minute left of the ninety minutes left Butler was again sent rolling in the box and this time the ref award a penalty, Ursell stepped up and calmly put the ball in to the back from the spot to draw the game level.

With stoppage time being played the dons the dons received a freekick on the left and with the big men coming up from the back the was only one outcome the ball was floated to the back post where Matt Everard powered the ball pass the keeper and onto the post and with the keeper still flapping at the back post Steve Butler dived in and head the ball into an open net to sparked a mass of celebrations on and off the pitch.

What a come back the team show some real steel to turn the game around and snatch the three points

Croydon Athletic 1 AFC Wimbledon 3

The dons recorded their 2nd successive win of the new season with an away victory against Croydon Athletic, the dons took another early lead when Richard Butler rounded the keeper and then flicked the ball back to Robert Ursell who placed the ball into the far top corner.

With half an hour gone Gavin Bolger ran at Croydon Athletic defence in to the box on the right and crossed over a low ball into the canter where the Wizard Ursell was on hand to knock in his 2nd goal of the game and give the dons some breathing space.

Just before half time the heavens opened and the heaven's rain continued for the rest of the game, the dons where finding Croydon Athletic a tougher test than the opening game against Ashford, up front Croydon Athletic had ex don Paul Scott, but the back three handled him well and gave him no chances and he was sub at half time.

Joe Sheerin replace Richard Butler on sixty five minutes and a minute later he ran on to a ball in the Croydon Athletic box and back heeled the ball into the path of Jamie Taylor who hit the ball first time round the keeper three nil.

Croydon Athletic didn't give up and on seventy two minutes got a well earned consolation when Danny Stassinos latched onto a ball that look to have come off his arm, then some bad defending allowed him to come one on one with Danny Naisbitt and he slid the ball through Dannys feet.

Three one away from home against a good team, but not the best of performances.

Saturday 14th August 2004
AFC Wimbledon 5 Ashford Town (K) 1

Not a bad start in our new division, the Dons stepped up to the Ryman Division One in some style today with a five one drumming of Ashford Town.

On a bright sunny day the Dons kicked off attack the westbank and from the start looked well up for the game, Ashford looked solid in defence, but their keeper did have a few doggie moments early on, then on twenty one minutes they had the cheek to go one up, from a freekick the ball bounced around in the box and Matt Bower poked the ball low pass Danny Naisbitt.

With that kick up the backside the dons stepped up a gear and two minutes later Jamie Taylor ran at the Ashford defence, slide the ball to Robert Ursell, who sold a defender a dummy leaving him on his backside he then hit a shot that the keeper was unable to hold falling in the path of the in running Jamie Taylor's chest and dropping down to an unmarked Richard Butler for a simple tap in and level the game.

Four minutes later Jamie Taylor was in the right spot again to get on the end of a cross and half volley the ball in from the six yard box, the dons went three one up on the half hour mark when Matt Everard head a corner ball goal ward which looked to be going into the diving keepers hands, until our other Butler intervened and send the ball in the opposite direction and into the back of the net to his and the three thousand odd fan utter joy.

Half Time Three One

Three minutes into the second half the Dons killed the game off, after some good inter passing between Gavin Bolger, Michael Woolner and Jamie Taylor Woolner found himself in the box and his low drive was parried away by the keeper and in the scramble by the Ashford defenders to clear the ball away Woolner manage to toe the ball through to Richard Butler on the corner of the six yard box who then side footed the ball into the opposite corner.

Ashford where totally shell shocker and could have gone the way of many CCL teams of last year were it not for the woodwork and some good saves by the keeper, and Danny Naisbitt at the other end had only one corner and a couple of long through balls to deal with for the rest of the game.

Joe Sheerin and Gareth Graham came on for the two Butlers and and after a few more chances and with the Dons attacking at will they saved the best till last with what must be a contender for goal of the season already.

On seventy three minutes Ginge picked the ball up in our half and laid the ball on to the Wizard Ursell who turned and threaded the ball to Jamie Taylor on the edge of the box and with the outside of his foot curled the ball over the keeper's head into the opposite top corner, four touches from the halfway line to the back of the net now that smooth flowing on the deck football.

With both the Butler's having a rest it was time for Jamie the Taylor to go off for a well earned rest and standing ovation and be replaced by Martin Randall back from his bad head injury, the dons had three or four more chances to extended the lead and the ref finally put Ashford out of their misery after about five or six minutes of extra time

Finally the PSF matches are over and the team has gelled into a soiled unit, the match against Ashford T (M) wasn't exactly one sided, but the Dons did have the majority of play and after Gavin Bolger had given the Dons the lead after twenty one minutes the game always looked comfortable.

Richard Bulter was not only playing against his old team, but was also the captain on the night and was also causing them not end of trouble looking to brake his goal scoring duck and on fifty six minutes he was in the right place to scramble the ball under the keeper to get his 1st goal for the dons.

The Ashford keeper had to be stretched off with about ten minutes to go after he clashed accidentally into Joe Sheerin as they where both going for the ball., Joe Sheerin made the score three nil in the eighty eighth minute when the ball was cross over to the back of the six yard box he volleyed the ball home.

Saturday 7th August 2004
AFC Wimbledon 3 Bognor Regis Town 0

In the dons second to last friendly before the season starts, on another very hot day the dons opponents Bognor faced a trip away from the seaside and probably wish they had stayed there, after two games with the opening goals in under two minutes the dons took their time to take the lead, after Robert Ursell had made the keeper tip the ball round the post for a corner at the westbank end, from the corner Matt Everard produced a trademark headed goal for the 2nd game running after nine minutes.

The Conference South team had the better of the 1st half after that, playing some good flowing football and putting the dons defence under pressure for most of it, but the dons soaked up everything that Bognor throw at them and looked to counter attack at every opportunity, Bognor produced the best move of the half producing a finger tip save from Danny Naisbitt, half time 1-0.

The 2nd half saw the dons make three substitutions Gavin Bolger, Richard Butler, Steve Gibson came on for Michael Woolner, Anthony Howard and Joe Sheerin, the dons should have had a penalty after Jamie Taylor was brought down, but the ref gave a freekick to Bognor, the dons continued to soak up Bognor's pressure which with the heat was becoming less as the game went on and in the eighty second minute Ryan Gray broke away from the halfway line and calmly slide the ball pass the keeper to put the dons two up.

The third goal came right in full time Jamie Taylor hit a low ball across the box to Robert Ursell, who trapped the ball set him self, pick his corner and hit the ball home, the ref blow for full time just after the restart.

Kingstonians 1 AFC Wimbledon 4

The Dons and K's once again faced up to each other in the battle for top dogs at the kings meadow, this evening was for the Trevor Jones Memorial Trophy in honor of the Kingstonians keeper who died last year.

For the second game running the dons took the lead in under two minutes, a Richard Butler header was cleared by the keeper on for Jamie Taylor to follow up with a simple tap in, the dons then had the best of the possession for the next ten minutes before the K's settled in to their game and on the half hour mark the K's received a freekick, which was hit to the far post to be headed home for the equaliser.

The K's continued to put the dons under pressure until half time, but were held a bay by the dons defence and Danny Naisbitt in goal taking the teams in at half time level.

With the K's attacking the westbank in the 2nd half, the dons who had migrated to the athletics end for the second half didn't get to see much action as the K's continued to have the better of the game, but still the dons held firm, the best chance the K's had to score came from the spot after the ref had awarded a penalty for a handball, Danny Naisbitt guess right and parried the ball away and was then replaced in goal by Paul Smith for the twenty five minutes, Joe Sheerin also came on at the same time making his come back from injury.

The dons made two further changes in Gavin Bolger and Darren Dobinson and the fresh legs seem to give the dons the upper hand in the last fifteen minutes, then soon after the guy on the P.A. had announced that the game would be going to penalties if still level at full time, the dons received a corner that Robert Ursell sent over and Matt Everard rose and sent a a looping header from the back of the six yard box back across into the goal to put the dons ahead with only six minutes left.

Then straight from kick off the K's defence hit self-destruct and a minute later during another dons attack they passed the ball to Jamie Taylor on his own on the edge of the area, Jamie then hit the ball under the outcoming keeper too make it three one.

With time running out Steve Gibson sent over a cross that Jamie Talyor then cheekily back heeled while the ball was still in the air into the path of Joe Sheerin to blast home and give the dons a four one win and some nice silverware for the cabinet.
