Saturday 30 August 2003
AFC Wimbledon 3-0 North Greenford Utd

Two 2nd half goals from Kevin Cooper split by a Ryan Gray goal, plus some good reaction saves by new keeper Matt Martin was enough to give the Dons the three points in the toughest test so far, North Greenford may not have scored but they held the Dons to 0-0 at half time.

The defence looked far more confident this game and Matt Martin must have given them that with a lot more talking than usual, Darren Dobinson did another good job at left back and was jointly awarded the match sponsors man of the match with N.Greenfords Keeper Gary Jallow who did well making sure that the scoreline was kept level at half time.

The Dons dug in and on 53mins Gavin Bolger crossed the ball into the box Coops slightly miss hit the ball which went into the corner of the goal, six minutes later Coops had another shot on goal but this time Jallow got his hand to the ball, but could only push it into the path of Ryan Gray to knock home his 2nd goal of the season.

The third goal came in injury time as a cross was headed down by Ali Russell, there was Kevin Cooper again to drill home the ball low into the back of the net and send the 2,708 the Dons six points clear at the top of the table.

Withdean 2000 2-4 AFC Wimbledon

What a weekend, up against two of last years toughest teams, but both where rolled over slightly buttered and stuffed 4-2.

Before the game the talk was about which team Withdean would put out last years champions or the team that had lost three games already, we also had a few team selection problems and with Matt Everard and Simon Bassey in the queue for tea's before the game they obviously were both playing, Bolger was out with a shoulder problem and Danny Oakins was away on holiday.

The team fielded with Darren Dobbinson at left back/winger over lapping well with Ryan Gray and it was soon apparent that it was Withdean 2k3/4 that we were up against and it didn't take long for the striking power of Joe & Coops to notch up a two goal lead, one each the 1st coming on 12 mins when Steve Gibson knocked in a good cross to the near post up sprung Kevin Cooper to head home, yes head home a superb goal with his head, that alone would have made the early start well worth willed, but not to be out done 7mins later a free kick was awarded to the Dons just inside the Withdean half Seb Favata knock the ball into the box, which looked like it was going to just fall to the keeper, but in dived Joe Sheerin to make contact with his head from about 10 yards out and put the ball past the stranded keeper.

The Dons seem to take their foot off the pedal and Withdean had a couple of chances 32mins they scrambled over an goal and a few minutes later nearly had a 2nd as the ball was cleared off the head of a Withdean players head and over the bar, but that was the extent of their chances and the score at half time was 1-2 the Dons.

With a good team talk behind them the Dons came out for the 2nd half looking solid again and started to create more chances, but it wasn't until the 74 min that they made one pay when Michael Rootes (on for Noel Frankum) making his debut latched onto a through ball and with only the keeper to beat, who had come out diving towards Michael's feet he chipped the ball just enough to clear the keeper and hard enough for the ball to cross the line dispute the efforts of the spraying defender on the line 1-3 the Dons.

The two mintues later the Dons where awarded a free kick on the corner of the box which was the keeper looked like he had held, but he was under pressure from Wade Falane (on for Joe Sheerin) and dropped the ball right at Wade's feet and from a yard out tapped the ball over the line to cheers of we are going up say we are going up & were's your championship gone.

Withdean made the result look a bit more repectable for them when they scored a second from about 35yard out with a minute to go, but the 3 points had looked a certainty as soon as Coops had scored with his head (sorry had to mention that again) and with four wins out of four we are now three point clear of Raynes Park in 2nd, technically our next opponents could be level on points with two games in hand and AFC Wallingford could be two points behind, but for now we are top of the league.

Saturday 23 August 2003
AFC Wimbledon 4 Southall 2

It maybe early but we are top of the league say we are top of the league, a superb 1st half performance with three goals in the first 24 mins, two cracking goals from captain fantastic Joe Sheerin and the 3rd a well taken penalty from Kevin Cooper gave the Dons a three goal lead against Southall.

Southall pulled a goal back on 36mins, but it was the Dons who where always in control and could have had a 4th & 5th, but for the woodwork and a good save from a Matt Everard header, Matt Everard received a knock just before half time and was replaced by Simon Bassey during the brake and Joe Sheerin was given a yellow card for throwing the ball away when he didn't get a throw in.

The 2nd half was a dull affair mainly because of the refs giving a freekick every other tackle, Leon White replaced Coops with about 20 mins left and had a couple of good chances, the 4th Dons goal came on 87 mins when a ball was sent down the left wing to Ryan Gray who went to the bye line then turned in and sent over a cross which curled untouched into the top right corner.

Noal Frankum came on late in the game and it was a bad back pass that let in the Southall striker to get his and Southall's 2nd in 90+ mins, the ref blow his whistle almost straight after the kick off to end the game, the Dons received the three point which put us top of the league and Wallingford have moved up to 2nd and our next opponent's Champions Withdean have a 100% record again and are already into double figures in goals i.e. they have lost all their games and conceded ten goals against.

AFC Wimbledon 3 v Merstham 2

A second half hatrick by captain Joe Sheerin, the final goal on 89 mins gave the Dons the three points, but it was another case of giving the other side a two goal head start.

Merstham 1st goal came in the 1st minute when keeper Tony Smith dropped the ball into his own net, their 2nd goal came in the 21st minute from some sloppy defending, the Dons where still all over Merstham, but for some good saves and good defending the Dons should have not only equalised but also gone into the lead at half time by a couple of goals.

Kevin Cooper and Jamie Angell replaced Simon Bassey and Wade Falana at half time and from the start the Dons where again all over the Merstham defence with waves after waves of attacks, on 69 mins from a throw in Joe Sheerin got his head to the ball and put it into the net to bring the score to 1-2, the Merstham keeper had to make some fine saves, but despite all Merstham hard work at the back on 86 mins it was again Joe Sheerin step up to equalise for the Dons.

Then in the 90th minute Joe Sheerin hit a powerful shot from the edge of the box box that the Merstham keeper stood no chance with and to put the Dons into a 3-2 lead and what a sight it was to see the main stand erupt as one to the goal.

Overall a hard fought win that was a pleasure to watch, will just need to get something for the nerves if it's going to be like that all season.

Feltham 0 v AFC Wimbledon 2

Two well taken goal both made by Andy Sullivan gave the Dons a two nil win on the plastic at Feltham, but it could have been by more after the Dons had dominated the 1st half.

The 1st goal was scored just before half time when Sully won the ball back on the edge of the left side of the box and cross over a low ball that Wade Falana could not make contact with, but Lee Sidwell was following up behind him and hit the ball back across to the far corner of the goal.

In the 2nd half Feltham came out looking more up for a game and despite some good pressure by both side it wasn't until the 70th minute when Sully again laid the ball across this time it was Matt Everard on the far corner that slotted the ball home.

Final score 0-2 the Dons fine performances by all the players and a difficult away fixture out the way with three points in the bag.

Saturday 9 August 2003
Sutton Utd 1 v AFC Wimbledon 0

In the blistering heat AFC Wimbledon once more took a trip down Gander Green Lane, a year a bit after our inaugural game and on the 40th anniversary of our FA Amateur Cup game against Sutton and despite the heat both teams fought for every ball and literary in the 30th min when Sean Daly and a Sutton player where replaced on the refs wishes after a bit of handbags at ten paces.

There was a one minutes silence before the kick off to mark the lost of Ray Harford who died today after a long battle against cancer, he was a popular manager at the Plough Lane and all the other clubs he managed including assistant to Kenny Dalglish at Blackburn when helping to win the premiership at Blackburn.

The game was also stopped couple of times for a drinks brake and both teams made a number of substitutes included Bassey and Sullivan who came back on, one key substitute was the return to the pitch from injured of Kevin Cooper on 68 mins, but he could not recreate the two goals he scored last year, but good to see him back all the same.

The only goal of the game came on 70mins when Rob Collins took advantage of a light headed back to the keeper, leaving him one on one with Ray Merry who had no chance with the shot.

One last minute substitute was the 1966 World Cup and Geoff Hurst football in replace of the FA Amatuer Cup, but the trusty FA Cup was still there.

Wednesday 5 August 2003
AFC Wimbledon 0 v Luton Town 2

Another solid performance against a strong Luton team, with all the players giving a good account of them self, having said that the Luton goal's both came from bad defensive mistakes 1st on 15m when Mark Nicholas headed the ball back short and Dean Crowe lobbed the stranded Ray Merry, the 2nd was on 37m when Roger Joseph fresh on for Mark Nicholas was out muscled for the ball and Adrian Forbes put the ball in for Lutons 2nd.

At two nil down the Dons head did not drop even though it was only a freindly their continued to battle on, in the 2nd half the Luton fans came down to the home end expecting more goals, but it was the Dons who had more of the chances.

Newport County AFC 1 v AFC Wimbledon 1

Another fun family day out was had by all with Newport had arranging bouncy castles, bucking broncos, face painting and mascot facing on the athletics track that surrounded the pitch and at half time they had a keep fit session and at full time there was a penalty shoot out between both sets of supporters and a live band.

In between all that there was also a game of football in which both teams had their fair share of the play with honour's finishing even after a Gavin Bolger 1st half goal from a cross from Andy Sullivan had given the Dons a deserving lead which was equalised by Newport County AFC in the 2nd half.

All in all a good 300 miles round trip too a different country with a good game of football to boot, hey would that be class as European football match.
